Strabismus Surgery: Precisely Realigning Eye Position

Strabismus is a misalignment of the visual axes that can affect both children and adults. When glasses or orthoptic exercises are insufficient, surgical intervention may be recommended.

At Vision Clinique, strabismus surgery is performed by ophthalmologists specialized in eye muscle disorders, working closely with orthoptists to ensure comprehensive and personalized follow-up.

Why Undergo Strabismus Surgery?

  • Improve or restore binocular vision

  • Eliminate double vision (diplopia)

  • Prevent amblyopia in children (lazy eye)

  • Correct a visible misalignment for aesthetic reasons

The decision to operate is made after a full orthoptic assessment and detailed ophthalmologic evaluation.

Before the Surgery

Before surgery, the patient undergoes several consultations:

Pre-operative evaluations:

  • Measurement of the strabismus angle

  • Ocular motility examination

  • Binocular vision and fusion assessment

For children, surgery may be scheduled from the age of 2–3 depending on the type and progression of the strabismus.

The Surgical Procedure

Duration: between 30 minutes and 1 hour depending on the number of muscles involved.

Anesthesia: general for children, local or general for adults.

Principle:

The surgery involves strengthening, weakening, or repositioning one or more extraocular muscles to align the eyes properly.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, allowing the patient to return home the same day.

After the Surgery

Post-operative care:

  • Mild discomfort or irritation for a few days

  • Prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops

  • Light activities recommended during the first week

Results: eye alignment is typically visible within the first few days, with significant functional and aesthetic improvement.

Post-op recommendations:
  • Avoid swimming or eye makeup for the first 10 days

  • Do not rub the eyes

  • Carefully follow all medical instructions

Monitoring

Follow-up appointments are scheduled with the ophthalmologist and orthoptist to monitor progress and, if needed, recommend additional visual therapy.
